Inner Calm Counselling

Inner Calm

Inner Calm Counselling is the private psychotherapy practice operated by Jenni Jenkins, Registered Social Worker, Psychotherapist.

Interns are Qualifying Registered Psychotherapists.  These therapists are completing the final practicum of their Masters degrees.  Currently all interns are students of Yorkville University's Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology.  Each intern completes an 8 month practicum before opening their own private psychotherapy practice.  Each intern intends to base their practice in Sarnia, ON and also offer online therapy - and each client may choose to continue working with their therapist at their new location after the practicum ends.

Therapy at Inner Calm Counselling can help you to :
  • increase mindfulness
  • reduce anxiety
  • cope with stress
  • ease conflict
  • make decisions
  • feel more grounded
  • improve communication among family members
  • learn what works - and doesn't work - for you in therapy
Each counselling session is goal focused.  Sometimes the goal is for you to vent and feel heard.  Sometimes the goal is to work through a program.  Sometimes the goal is to soothe your feeling of overwhelm.  The therapist might suggest a goal, and ultimately the focus is your choice.

We will offer a safe space for you to speak about what's on your mind (or what's making your heart heavy, your stomach hurt, whatever it is for you). We will listen to you.

We will teach you what we have learned about the brain, emotions and behaviour.  We will suggest things you can do to feel more well.

The office environment is intended to inspire healthy living room conversations at home.

I grew up in Corunna and Sarnia. After attending University I lived in Guelph-Wellington working for Public Health and Upper Grand District School Board. I returned to Sarnia in 2018 and started Inner Calm Counselling. I am a mama to 3 children and a stepmom to 2 children.

I’ve worked as a counsellor since 1997. I’ve worked for agencies committed to easing homelessness, improving attachments, decreasing criminal behaviour, increasing employability, improving health, and increasing academic success.

I know that psychotherapy is most effective when there is a ‘good fit’ between someone and their therapist. People most likely to feel good fit with me are people who want calm, connection, authenticity, wellness and peace.

Things that might come up in sessions:
  • you are worthy of the kindness and compassion that you give your friends
  • you may never change the reflex thought that comes to your mind (and the feelings that come with it) but you can change what you do with it
  • a few deep breaths might make you feel better and will not change your values
  • discomfort is a very common feeling and it always passes
I am an ally of the 2SLGBTQI+ community.  I am pro-abortion and pro-vaccination.

Being human is so complicated. Find a therapist who gets you.

Master of Social Work Degree
Registered Social Worker, Psychotherapist

I earned my Bachelors degree in Sociology in 2001 and my Master of Social Work degree in 2007 - both at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (#816653).  My career has specialized in helping people to apply mindfulness practices to notice and change how they cope with life.

My work is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindful Self Compassion.

I will respectfully challenge you when it seems you're caught up in a thinking error. Sometimes worry and relationship patterns cloud our good judgment. Sometimes it's easier to work through things with a listener who isn't in our family and friend circle. I will suggest material for you to read or listen to in case you have the time and head space to do so.

The controlled act of psychotherapy is defined as: "Treating, by means of psychotherapy technique, delivered through a therapeutic relationship, an individual’s serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory that may seriously impair the individual’s judgement, insight, behaviour, communication or social functioning."

Yoga principles are woven through my practice. I appreciate and recommend practices of breathing, movement and mindfulness.

If you have received counselling in the past and want to review the tools, skills or strategies you had found helpful (or hopeful), I will happily explore those with you. I have received brief training on numerous forms of therapy and best practices for common disorders and illnesses including IFS, EFT, ACT and DBT. I do not specialize in these approaches.

I believe that each person has the wisdom to handle this life, and that sometimes we need another person to listen and reflect our own wisdom back to us. I do not judge what you do to cope. We’re on this journey together.

People who inspire my work include: Malcolm Gladwell, Dan Siegl, Glennon Doyle, Brene Brown, James Nestor, Lidia Zylowska, Lori Gottlieb, Gabor Mate, Kristin Neff & Chris Germer.

Typically individual sessions with me are 1.25 hr.  I have tried for years to fit the flow of my work into 1 hour.

I bring a unique blend of academic expertise and real-world passion to my work.

My journey in supporting the mental well-being of others officially began at King's University College, where I earned a BA in Thanatology (the study of grief and bereavement) and Childhood and Social Institutions (a children’s advocacy program).

While growing up in Sarnia, Ontario, I've always been deeply connected to my community, especially in matters related to supporting mental well-being. This drive to contribute to the betterment of individuals and families has been a driving force in my psychotherapy journey.

My therapeutic approach is rooted in the belief that each person's journey is unique and deserves to be met with empathy and understanding. I strive to create a safe and collaborative space where clients can explore their challenges, identify their goals, and work towards achieving them.

I view my role as a psychotherapist as one of support and guidance, following the client's lead. I see value in integrating elements of mindfulness, self-awareness and gratitude into our sessions. I tailor my approach to meet the individual needs of each client.

I take a person-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed approach while drawing from principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

My goal is to offer a neutral space to explore a variety of concerns, including grief, loss, life changes and transitions, self-esteem, anxiety, depression and general life stressors.

I am able to work with ages 10 and older.

Outside of my work with Inner Calm Counselling, I also dedicate my time to supporting grieving children at St. Joseph's Hospice. This experience has enriched my understanding of loss and reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate and effective therapy.

In my spare time, I prioritize my own mindfulness and self-awareness journey through journaling, reading, and connecting with my body through regular movement.

I look forward to the opportunity to journey alongside you as you navigate life's challenges and discover your inner strength and resilience.

I am a Master of Arts Counselling Psychology candidate, and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (# 15199). I am currently qualified to practice under clinical supervision and am thrilled to be joining Inner Calm Counselling for the practicum portion of my journey to full licensure. In addition to these qualifications, I am a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (# 641993). I currently work as an elementary Occasional Teacher for the Lambton Kent District School Board and a private tutor for students in my area.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from Queen’s University in 2005, a diploma in Behavioural Science Technology from St. Lawrence College in 2006, and Bachelor of Education from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2013. I pride myself in being a lifelong learner. While completion of my master’s degree in December 2024 will mean the realization of my educational goals, my professional training and development will continue. I look forward to building a practice which blends my disciplinary backgrounds and am particularly interested in working with students (children/youth aged 10+), their families, and educators.

Until recently, my career was set in a correctional environment. I have over 15 years’ experience working in behaviour change, mental health, and education with incarcerated persons. This has left me comfortable and equipped to support those struggling with a variety of issues including problematic behaviour and addiction, major mental illness, poor emotion regulation and coping, grief and loss, trauma and abuse, negative peer and family relationships, suicidal ideation, and self-harm. I am skilled at both individual and group-level intervention.

My work has been based in behavioural and social learning techniques, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Undoubtedly, these approaches will influence my future practice. However, I recognize the uniqueness of every person and understand the importance of tailoring treatment to individual needs. Working with me, you can expect a person-centered, respect-focused, and eclectic style. All therapeutic relationships will be grounded in humaneness and humanness.

Outside of work, I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. These are some of my most important roles. I am also a volunteer, involved with various activities related to school/education, child and youth mental health, and healthy leisure.

Having recently returned to the area, I am happy to serve the community that I love. I am eager to continue this as a registered mental health professional, and excited to see where this can take us.
